Foodies are lining up to experience chef Carl Schroeder's new creations.
I've heard it many times over the past six months, "Fine Dining is Dead." My waiter told me this as he explained where most of the waitstaff had come from - a couple downtown spots where entrees were $30-45.
Carl and business partner Terryl Gavre (of Cafe 222 and Market fame) have created a cool, comfortable, casual restaurant and bar with a broad appeal. Entrees range from about $13-19, so you can take a date or your whole family without breaking the bank, pun intended. The namesake is cleverly referenced with menus that resemble old bank ledgers. The renovated interior has enlivened the space in many ways. I love how they removed the drop ceiling to expose the large wooden beams and lofted roof.
The
food lived up to my expectations. We started off with the truffle oil french fries, which I highly recommend. Next we shared the spiced tomato soup, which was good, but didn't knock my socks off. For the entrees you'll find carefully selected fish, chicken, and beef dishes as well as tacos, and even fettuccine bolognese. Hello diversity!
I had the beef short ribs. My girlfriend Kristi had the BBQ braised pork tacos. The short ribs had excellent flavor and melted in my mouth. The roasted baby artichokes were plump and sweet.
The pork tacos were tender and juicy in a flaky, fried corn shell. The perfect mix of hot and cold.
The finale came in the form of butterscotch pudding at the waiter's recommendation. He was right, awesome indeed.
