Bencotto Italian Kitchen Opens in Little Italy!

Nate Benedetto by Nate Benedetto | 2.09.2010

I grew up in Chicago eating pasta once or twice a week.   My parents love to eat Italian food and I've had a hard time wowing them when they visit SD.   I know where I'm taking them on their next visit = Bencotto.

I was not surprised that the interior was urban-sleek, since this spot is located in Jonathan Segal's new building the Q.   But looks aside, this place has what I was really hoping for, top notch Italian at reasonable prices.

At the waiter's recommendation we started with a large portion of Prosciutto di Parma, which they slice at the bar as you walk in.   I love me some swine and this could have been the best I've ever tasted.  It was so light it practically dissolved in my mouth.

I made a strong selection in round 2 with the Lasagna alla Bolognese.   The layered pasta was ultra fresh and light.  The creamy sauce was sweet and decadent.  This could be my new favorite San Diego dish.

My girlfriend had the tagliatelle with pesto sauce.  The pasta was perfectly al dente and incredibly fresh.  The pesto had just the right amount of 'pop'.  You can pick any pasta and any sauce for only $12.  The fiercely competitive SD dining scene has put a pinch on restaurant owners, but its a delight for locals when you can get a fresh, healthy, authentic plate in a New York or SF style spot for $12!

Kudos Bencotto, I'm looking forward to showing my parents that San Diego Italian food can hang with the best of 'em.
