Urban Street Art Collides in San Diego

Modern, youthful, urban art hits the streets this week for the biggest blast of culture and creative infusion this city has seen in years. New exhibits and galleries, current and tangible like nothing else before are opening over the next few days… and they brought their friends.

On paper we’re looking at exhibit openings such as MCASD’s, “Viva La Revolución,” with pieces from the likes of Banksy (UK), Shepard Fairey (US), Os Gemeos (Brazil), and so, so many more.

Also, this Friday at the Wonderbread Factory in East Village, Survey Select opens its doors for the highly anticipated gallery space and Narrative Arts Exhibition. Over the summer they will put on film showings, spray art classes, Zine workshops, and series of live music happenings.

And yeah, that other thing, Comic-Con. The actual convention is one thing, the evening Zombie parades, wild parties, and action heroine character burlesque shows are another all together.

In anticipation for these events and the huge crowds to swarm the city over the coming week or more, street artists have borrowed the walls of the city, annoying some straight laced folks in the process. But to others, it has given them a new spark of hope for this city’s culture and art appreciation.

Keep your eyes about you this next week as you cruise through all of the Urban area. From downtown, to Hillcrest and North Park, art is jumping out of the galleries and conventions and onto the streets.
